About Big Wednesday

Big Wednesday is an American ‘coming of age’ movie directed by John Milius and released in 1978. Milius co-wrote Big Wednesday with Denny Aaberg, with the movie based on a short story Aaberg had published in the Surfer Magazine in 1974 called “No Pants Mance.”, and influenced by their own experiences at living and surfing at Malibu in the 1960s and 70s. The film stars Jan-Michael Vincent, William Katt and Gary Busey as young California surfers growing up and facing life and the prospect of the Vietnam War against the backdrop of their love of surfing and the importance of their friends.

Initially Big Wednesday was a critical and commercial flop, but in the years after to the present day the film has found, and still finds, a cult audience with surfers, anyone growing up, and those with a love of the surfing lifestyle.

Interesting fact: three little-known friends from film school in the 70s, John Milius, George Lucas and a certain Stephen Spielberg, agreed to exchange credits in Big Wednesday, Star Wars and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind prior to releasing all the films. After Big Wednesday open to poor reviews, Lucas asked for his credit back from Milius! But now established as a cult classic, Big Wednesday is widely considered to one of the best surf movies of all time. Is it yours?
